Who does what with data? And why? Are you a data scientist, data analyst, or a data engineer? Our new career guide for data & analytics professionals helps you navigate this confusing job market.

Data science has evolved into *the* data hype in the Dutch business world. These days, every plumber, fishmonger, and espresso bar is busy optimizing their business with ETL pipelines, neural networks, and other unsupervised learning models. Without big data and AI, companies are doomed to fail. Right?

As with all buzzwords, many people are busy with it without really knowing what it’s about. Everyone who works even a little with data is labeled a data scientist, and we now call statistical calculations AI algorithms. This creates a lot of confusion.

We’re looking for a Data Scientist! Or are we?

At DataJobs, we often hear from organizations that they’re looking for a data scientist. But after digging a bit deeper, it often turns out that they don’t actually need a data scientist profile—they’re really looking for a data analyst or data engineer. This isn’t surprising. For someone unfamiliar with data, a large amount of it can be intimidating, and data science is a buzzword, so it's the first thing people think of. Employers aren’t the only ones causing this confusion. We also frequently meet freelancers or job seekers who try to market themselves as data scientists or data engineers but actually have the profile of a data analyst.
