STEM – what does it stand for?

In the category 'how did that go again?'—today a brief explanation of the term STEM.

STEM is an English acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

STEM

STEM is used as a collective term for the academic fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In that sense, there is significant overlap between STEM and the term Beta sciences.

In the Netherlands—and Flanders—the English acronym STEM is also being used more and more. Just pay attention; you’ll increasingly see it in news reports, blogs, and articles.

STEM skills and the future job market

In recent years, we’ve seen STEM skills increasingly mentioned in the context of the future job market. There are various global initiatives aimed at preparing children for so-called 'STEM careers'.

More than half of those children will likely work in jobs that don’t yet exist. However, it is expected that education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics will continue to offer good career opportunities in the future.

In the years to come, we will encounter even more developments such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and other advanced technologies. STEM skills ensure that you, as an employee, can keep up with these changes.

Human skills

Still, I hope that important 'human skills' such as love, creativity, emotion, and empathy won’t be overshadowed by all these Beta and STEM skills. Because those human abilities are just as important. Just like the Alpha and Gamma sciences. After all, we shouldn't lose our 'voice' in the future, right?
