What is a startup? – Five data-driven startups from the Netherlands

What is a startup? In this blog, you'll read the definition. I’ll also introduce five Dutch companies that can truly be called data-driven startups.

It has been a buzzword in the business world for years: 'startup'. But what does it actually mean? Many people think that any small, newly founded company is a startup—especially if it does ‘something’ with technology.

I also see many entrepreneurs proudly calling themselves 'startup owner'. They use it almost as a badge of honor. And the employees call themselves 'growth hackers'. Anyway, plenty of blogs have already been written about funny job titles. But that’s not the point here.

Because I’d like to talk to you about a few interesting Dutch 'data-driven startups' (to put it in proper Dutch…).

Definition of a startup

So what exactly is a startup?

This is what the Dutch Chamber of Commerce says on its website (source: ondernemersplein.kvk.nl/startups)

"In short, a startup is a company with an innovative idea that creates a scalable and repeatable product or service, developed using new technology."

Scalable and repeatable means that the product is created once and can be sold repeatedly. It’s easier and cheaper than making a different product for every customer."

So for a startup, the key elements are: innovation, scalability, and ambition.
