Why is mentioning a salary in a job posting still taboo? As an employer, don’t skip this important selection criterion—stand out by including it. It saves a lot of time and irritation. Plus, you'll instantly become best friends with "Google for Jobs".
Salary Ranges
Starting today, they’re clearly visible on DataJobs.nl—right at the top of every job posting. I’m talking about the salary ranges that go with the vacancies. At least, that’s the idea…
A market-competitive benefits package
Because when I enthusiastically started filling out the new fields on DataJobs.nl just now, I have to admit—I was a little disappointed. Only a few dozen organizations actually include clear salary amounts in their postings. Most fall back on clichés like “a market-competitive benefits package” or “excellent working conditions.”
Barista
Some do rave about the delicious (Barista!?!) coffee they serve, the ‘Deutsche Meister’ foosball table, or the beautiful walks you can take in the nearby park. But mention a salary? No way!
Ticking off job requirements
I even noticed that some organizations don’t mention what they offer at all. The job post is just a checklist of requirements! The only thing missing are the boxes to tick off while you’re sitting in the interview.
Extra time and frustration
That can—and should—be different. And yes, I also believe salary should never be the most important reason to apply for a job. But not mentioning a salary at all? That’s odd. It’s just as important a selection criterion for the applicant as, say, the job location or number of working hours. Not stating this can cause a lot of extra time and frustration. And no one wants that, right? I mean, if you're from Rotterdam, you're not going to apply for a permanent job in Groningen or Maastricht, are you? Just like someone used to earning €6,000 gross per month won’t apply for a job that maxes out at €3,500—unless they have a very good reason or motivation, of course. But then it’s a conscious choice.
So, what’s the pay?
So here’s a call to all organizations with vacancies. "Show me the money!" Show us “what it pays.” Reveal the “cashflow.” And see including the salary as an opportunity to stand out in a positive way from the “market-conform” crowd.
Be ready for Google for Jobs
And apparently, with the much-feared "Google for Jobs" that still seems to be on its way to the Netherlands, you score extra points if your job posting includes a salary. So do it!
