That’s what you’ll be doing in this role at Elsevier Research Products, which focuses on enhancing the performance of our online Researcher Platforms.
Transformation: Building a next-level search capability
Elsevier’s global Center of Excellence for big data and search, based in London and Amsterdam, is building an integrated, social and personal toolset that will deliver transformational value to researchers and research entities worldwide. Linking the traditional strengths of our publishing business to leading-edge technology in this way is critical to our company’s success.
Right now we have a great opportunity for someone who can drive the design and delivery of this capability, working with in-house search engineers as well as specialists from leading search consulting companies. This requires a deep experience of, and enthusiasm for, the latest massively parallel distributed technologies, specifically those devoted to Publishing (ScienceDirect, Health Advance, EVISE, and more), research enablement (Scopus, Mendeley) and Research Intelligence (SciVal, Pure).
You ensure the integration and personalization of a world-class big data, machine learning and search platform, designing an interoperable environment that is customized to meet the specific needs of researchers. In doing so you display and embody outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills based on a deep technical knowledge and experience of environments for big data engineering and distributed computation. You should also have an open mind towards new technologies, familiarity with cloud technologies and a curiosity for algorithm development.
It’s all about you
As you’ll have realized by now, this is an exciting opportunity to operate at the forefront of next-generation search capabilities using the very latest large-scale and distributed cloud platforms. So when we sit down and talk it is essential that you are able to demonstrate:
- University graduate (Master’s level) in Computer Science, or an associated area;
- An ability to drive new developments and implement process changes and disruptive technologies in the organization;
- Good communication and documentation skills, along with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical professionals.
This role calls on the advanced the agile software development skills that will enable you to improve the efficiency of existing code. You should therefore be proficient in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, Java etc.) and, ideally, experienced in stream processing system (eg. Spark, Kafka). With this will come an excellent understanding of Property Graphs, RDF’s, triple stores (e.g. Neo4j, Ontotext, etc.) and, preferably, a knowledge of machine learning, NLP and other modern data processing techniques.
